Full Job Description

The Miami Herald is looking for a senior political correspondent to cover President Donald Trump’s administration from the president’s home state, where he and his allies are looking to make America Florida during his second term.

This reporter will cover Trump with a Florida lens, keeping a watchful eye on the Sunshine State characters occupying key positions in the second Trump administration, the influence of the region’s deep-pocketed donors on the president, and Trump’s businesses and actions – including his policies that have important consequences for the people who live here.

This journalist should have a proven track record of generating ahead-of-the-curve story ideas, cultivating the sources necessary to break exclusives in an extremely competitive landscape, and a flair for writing timely, authoritative, relevant stories. The political correspondent should have the drive and ability to deliver compelling enterprise, and the writing skills to make sure stories don’t get lost in the weeds but rather capture the audience. This position is not for inside-the-Beltway writers, or journalists who like to run with the pack. It is for news junkies who love the craft of writing and reporting and embrace the changing industry in which we operate.

The senior correspondent will join a newsroom that has won 24 Pulitzer Prizes, including the 2022 Pulitzer for Breaking News for coverage of the Surfside condo collapse. The correspondent will work with our reporters in Miami, in Tallahassee and in Washington, with an eye to shaping and strengthening our political coverage.

In this role, you will need to:

  • Break news and produce enterprise and accountability stories that delve into the actions of the Trump administration and how the president and his key Florida appointees are affecting the state and the national stage
  • Bring sources with you and then build on that source base
  • Generate a steady stream of story ideas that don’t just cover the process of politics
  • Work in a collaborative way with reporters on other teams
  • Find creative, audience-focused ways to tell the politics story so it captures wider audience interest

The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:

  • At least five years reporting experience covering local, state or national politics
  • Clear, lively writing that pulls readers in and carries them all the way to the kicker
  • Drive to be the leader in news coverage, not a follower of what others have written
  • Openness and enthusiasm for using alternative story formats, multimedia    storytelling and collaboration with colleagues on our visual and data teams
  • Pride in accuracy and integrity in reporting
  • College degree or equivalent experience
  • A firm grasp of the Spanish language

To apply, include a persuasive cover letter, your resume and four to six examples of your best work.
