Job Description
The internal communications specialist is responsible for contributing to the development of internal communication strategies for Southern Company Gas’ Southern Operations, which includes Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) and Chattanooga Gas (CGC). Leads the development of internal communications plans and programs, and project manages them from beginning to end. Key contributor to the success of company’s employee engagement and change management initiatives. Provides communication counsel and support to all business units and functional areas within AGL and CGC. Writes original material and edits/proofreads material produced by co-workers. Responsible for company information bulletins and FUEL postings that originate from AGL and CGC internal communications. This position will also assist in AGL and CGC external communications as directed.
Functional Expertise:
- Contributes to the development of internal communication strategies for Southern Company Gas’ Southern Operations, which includes Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) and Chattanooga Gas (CGC)
- Responsible for execution of companywide and business partner-specific internal communication programs
- Writes and edits internal communications in support of corporate, business unit and business partner initiatives
- Develops communication schedules and project communications plans for specific initiatives
- Assists in some AGL and CGC external communications as directed
- Other duties as assigned
Business Acumen:
- Strong attention to detail and dedication for quality, accuracy, and timeliness
- Works closely with business unit leaders to ensure consistent messaging companywide and to optimize employee engagement
- Effectively leverages intranet, email, F2F, webcast, social media and other communication channels
- Serve as internal communication liaison on select corporate initiatives that involve a high degree of direct employee communications
Engagement:
- Works closely with business partners to deliver on internal communications needs for the business units in a fashion that is consistent with corporate guidelines
- Role modeling honesty, respect, organizational values and fairness towards all

- Monitors progress against metrics/deliverables; holds self & others accountable for results
- Develops, tracks and reports on success metrics that demonstrate the value of employee communications relative to corporate and business unit objectives
Qualifications
Education, Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications or similar combination of education and experience may be acceptable
Related Work Experience:
Required
- Minimum three years in employee communications, corporate communications or related field
Preferred
- Energy industry experience valuable

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Occasional Traveler (5-20% travel): The incumbent will be required to travel on occasion. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
